Equity and Focal Students
The California network—CANMEE—is striving to actualize equity in mathematics learning by designing lessons for powerful learning. We learn together by identifying focal students, writing equity-based research themes, and learning with and from students, teachers, and mathematics and equity commentators.
In order to reach a wider worldwide audience, the live session has been cancelled but we are delighted to announce that a pre-recorded event focusing on the work of CANMEE will be available for WALS members at a date to be announced very soon.
Speakers
Dr. Kyndall Brown, PhD (Executive Director, CA Math Project / CANMEE) is the Executive Director of the California Mathematics Project (CMP). CMP has 19 sites housed at universities and whose core values are centered on learning mathematics, offering equitable and rigorous mathematics learning opportunities to everyone, and developing teacher leaders. CMP’s signature project, CANMEE, the California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity is designed to leverage lesson study to better learn how to infuse equity into mathematics instruction. Kyndall leads all CANMEE efforts and participates in lesson studies providing mathematics and equity commentataries.
Dr. Brent Jackson, PhD (Research Associate, WestEd) is a research associate at WestEd conducting studies to address significant questions related to teaching and learning – intersecting research, policy, and practices. Brent began his work with lesson study as a middle school mathematics teacher, then he led district wide lesson study efforts, and has continued to study equitable learning environments. Brent is instrumental in CANMEE’s efforts to write research grants. He facilitates lesson study teams and provides equity commentaries for those teams.
Dr. Susie Håkansson, PhD (Equity Task Force, CANMEE / TODOS) is a mathematics education consultant actively involved with CANMEE and is a Past President and Board Member of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL. TODOS and the National Council for Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) jointly wrote the position statement “Mathematics Education Through the Lens of Social Justice: Acknowledgment, Actions, and Accountability” that guides CANMEE’s work. Susie shares her insights as a commentator (mathematics and equity), designs lesson study team reflection surveys, and conducts focus group interviews with lesson study teams.
Harold Asturias (Director, Bay Area Math Project) is the Director of the Bay Area Mathematics Project and Director of the Center for Mathematics Excellence and Equity at the University of California, Berkeley. Harold brings his expertise with mathematics assessment, second language learners, and relevant mathematics teaching and learning to CANMEE. As one of the originators of CANMEE, he continues to serve on the CANMEE Steering Committee connecting CANMEE to other organizations and intiatives committed to equity in mathematics education.
Joan Easterday facilitates CANMEE lesson study teams across Northern California. As part of the CANMEE network, Joan has supported developing equity resources for facilitators, commentators, and teams. The teams engage with those CANMEE assets as they engage in the complex work of learning from and with each other using lesson study as a vehicle. Through that process they learn to infuse equity into their respective mathematics classrooms. Joan serves on multiple CANMEE committees learning from the network what is working and where the network needs to improve.
