{"id":2566,"date":"2022-01-21T23:47:17","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T15:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.walsnet.org\/?p=2566"},"modified":"2023-04-19T07:23:29","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T07:23:29","slug":"clestum-first-international-seminar-on-lesson-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morphmatters.com\/wals-new-theme\/2022\/01\/21\/clestum-first-international-seminar-on-lesson-study\/","title":{"rendered":"CLeStuM\u2019s First International Seminar on Lesson Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Collaborative Lesson Study Malta (<a href=\"https:\/\/lessonstudymalta.wixsite.com\/clestum\">CLeStuM<\/a>) in collaboration with\nthe Faculty of Education at the University of Malta organised its first\ninternational seminar on <strong>Learning to\nLead Lesson Study<\/strong>. Lesson study, which is recognised as the world\u2019s fastest\ngrowing professional development model for teachers, is a learning process through\nwhich teachers collaboratively identify issues with teaching, do research, plan,\nteach and observe, and reflect to build new knowledge in their attempt to\nrefine their classroom practices. Held on Saturday 15 January 2022 and using a\nhybrid format, this 4-hour long seminar involved the international remote participation\nof more than 120 lesson study practitioners, researchers, teachers and school\nleaders from Austria, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malta, the Netherlands,\nthe Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland and the UK. This seminar\nshowcased and disseminated the work carried out by nine novice lesson study\nleaders in Malta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These novice lesson study leaders were\nstudents reading for the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and\nManagement offered by the Department of Leadership for Learning and Innovation\nat the Faculty of Education. These students had just completed a 35-hour\nelective course on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/courses\/studyunit\/LLI5206\">Leading Lesson Study<\/a> and this seminar\nprovided them with a platform to share and present their leading lesson study journeys. While seven of the nine lesson study leaders implemented lesson study within their own work setting, two were outsiders. Of the nine lesson study leaders, three also held a leadership role within their school. The presentations and follow-up discussions focused on three themes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>approaches to cultivate collaboration among teachers; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gathering timely and targeted feedback; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the roles of lesson study leaders when they are insiders or outsiders to the educational setting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides the nine presenters, this\nseminar included an introductory speech by Prof <a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/profile\/colincalleja\">Colin Calleja<\/a> (Dean of the Faculty of\nEducation), a keynote speech by Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educ.cam.ac.uk\/people\/staff\/dudley\/\">Pete Dudley<\/a> from the University of Cambridge\n(former President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walsnet.org\/\">World\nAssociation of Lesson Studies<\/a>) and the intervention of three\nFaculty of Education colleagues \u2013 Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/profile\/michelleattardtonna\">Michelle Attard Tonna<\/a>, Prof <a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/profile\/christopherbezzina\">Christopher Bezzina<\/a> and Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/profile\/michaelbuhagiar\">Michael A. Buhagiar<\/a> acting as discussants.
